Your First Week

Those who say that babies at birth understand nothing so far are actually wrong. Experts say that newborns can recognize their mother’s face. But how does it happen?
We offer you some information depicting the first week of your infant’s life.

Interesting particularities

Finally, your baby is here, with you and your family. And though this time is kind of tough, it is at the same moment the most wonderful period ever.

So, with your eyes full of happiness you are changing his/her diapers and all at once notice that this little person is looking at you! Well, some may say it is the way any mom wants the situation to be. However, specialists claim that infants understand faces!
Now you might be interested if your baby can easily recognize you and his/her daddy, right?
Thus, a research aimed to investigate whether one-week infants are able to distinguish between faces of their caretakers and faces of strangers, have shown quite an amusing result:
The researchers placed a video screen, so that babies could perfectly see it, and took a dummy hooked to that screen. When the babies started to suck the dummy, there appeared an unfamiliar face on the screen. While the infants were interested, they kept sucking the dummy, but with some time they lost the interest and the face of the stranger flickered out.
Then, the experiment was aimed to show the babies their moms’, dads’ and even nannies’ photos. The result was surprisingly amazing: when they saw familiar faces, they started sucking longer that during the previous experiment. That means that the babies wanted to see their caretakers’ faces longer, and that is why they sucked harder.

Such a phenomenon happens due to basic natural instincts, in fact. Seeing a familiar person means being safe, so infants feel relaxed.
It surely doesn’t mean you have to be by his/her face all the time, during day and night. Thus, when Uncle William arrives from Canada to see this little miracle and your baby gets nervous while he is nearby, do not worry and take note of the fact that he/she needs time to accustom to the uncle’s face.
Remember that, no matter what, you and the other close relatives are the most important people for your child – now and in the future.
