Ultrasound Testing

Ultrasound testing or ultrasonic scanning (US) is a very useful tool by means of which your healthcare provider can control your pregnancy course and get important information about fetus development.
US is mostly used to identify the date of conception or delivery, to find out if there’re any deviations during fetus development. US also serves as assistance for some genetic testing.
Depending on the stage of pregnancy ultrasonic scanning can be done either with a vaginal or an abdominal probe. A transducer sends sound waves of high frequency into the body. These waves are reflected back from different parts of the body and a picture is displayed at the monitor. The doctor will explain to you the results he receives.
Vaginal ultrasound (it’s also called transvaginal sonography) is usually done at earlier pregnancy stages. During this procedure a doctor will insert a vaginal transducer into your vagina so that the picture will be more accurate.
Abdominal ultrasound implies external scanning. The doctor will put some gel on your lower belly and will move there with a transducer.
Ultrasound can be done at any stage of pregnancy in relation to its aim. If the doctor tries to find out the date of conception an ultrasonic scanning will take place at an early stage.
It’s not stated that US has any side effects, but at the same time scientists can’t say it’s completely safe. In any case it has more advantages than drawbacks, that’s why it’s recommended to be done.
